landmannalaugar (portrait)

from $100.00

This is a glicee photo print of my absolute favorite location in Iceland; Landmannalauger. My first visit to this remote oasis in 2023 ignited an obsession with highlands; those of Iceland, and later Scotland, Chile, and Bolivia. Perhaps this place is the reason the word “highlands” has become a staple of my vocabulary, to the bewilderment of my city friends. A second visit in 2025 resulted in this image, a favorite in my collection of over 70TB worth of photos captured over 5 years. This image features a harmony of soft pastels and vibrant colors, miraculously evolved from what was once a charcoal and blood orange lava field thousands of years ago. The mountains are made of rhyolite, a silica-rich volcanic rock that contains a variety of minerals, including iron, which oxidizes and produces colors that feel out of place on a mountain. I imagine it hung on a black or slate gray wall, symbolizing how rainbow hues somehow came from jet black volcanic rock.
